It is kept in Wat Phrasrirattanasatsadaram (Wat Phra Kaew), Grand Palace in Bangkok. It is famous among foreign tourists as an outstanding attraction in Bangkok which they wish to see once in life.
The Emerald Buddha image or “Phra Kaew Morakot” wearing an attire of gold and precious jewels is seated on a very ornate raised alter in the ubosot. The 66 centimeter tall image in meditation mudra is carved from a single piece of dark green jade. Three times per year, at the start of the summer, rainy and cool season the King changes the attire of the Emerald Buddha during an impressive ceremony.
Information about Wat Boworn:
Wat Boworn or full name “Wat Bowornniwet Vihara Rajaworavihara” is a major temple in Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, Thailand. The temple is a center of the Thammayut Nikaya school of Thai Theravada Buddhism and has been a major temple of patronage of Chakri dynasty.
Wat Boworn is located near the Wan Chart Bridge and Banglamphoo Market. Prince Mahasakdipolsep, vice-king of the Third Reign, ordered the construction of this temple along with Wat Rangsisuthawas and it was built between C.E. 1824 to1832.
Wat Boworn is the residence of members of the royal family who enter the monkhood. It has been the residence of many the supreme patriarchs of the Buddhist Church in Thailand, and it is the site of Mahamakut Rajavittayalai, Thailand's first Buddhist institution of the high education.
Biography of Somdet Phra Yannasangwon:
Somdet Phra Yannasangwon (3 October 1913 –24 October 2013) was the 19th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. Spent his lifetime at Wat Boworn. Assumed the position from 1989 to 2013, until the sadly demise due to blood infection following recent surgery for an intestinal infection.
During his more than seventy years as a monk and novice, Somdet Phra Yannasangwon has held variety of posts in the Thai ecclesiastic hierarchy. In these roles, he has always been concerned with promoting education, both religious and secular. He has assisted in the founding and construction of numerous schools, as well as sponsoring campaigns to build schools, temples, and hospitals in rural communities. As abbot of Wat Boworn, he oversaw the renovation and expansion of this famed century-old monastery. Wat Boworn is known as one of several monasteries in Thailand where Westerners can not only study, but also ordain either as full bhikkhu, or for a limited term (such as vassa) as a novice (samanera). Long interested in the meditation techniques of the Thai forest monks, His Holiness has helped make his temple residence a center for meditation study and instruction in Bangkok, himself delivering lectures on meditation and Buddhist teachings on two Uposatha days each month.
He has also been active in teaching to both non-Thais and the international Thai emigrant community. His recorded sermons and teachings are distributed among Thais living outside Thailand, particularly in areas where there is not access to temples or Theravada monks. Non-Thais have also been encouraged to study Buddhism. A number of his books and talks have also been translated into English, and he has been involved in sponsoring the establishment of temples and monasteries outside Thailand.
