The Biography of LP Kasem:
Luang Por Kasem, abbot of Samnak Susan Trailak in Lampang Province was an admirable modest monk accepted as the important personnel of Thailand. Thai people have faith in LP Kasem very much including His Majesty the King Bhumibol.
LP Kasem was born on the 28th November BE 2455 (CE 1912) in Lampang Province. He began monkhood at age 15. LP Kasem studied Pali very well. He could read, write and translate Pali proficiently. He passed the highest level of monk examination. Although he progressed in monkhood, he did not want to be in a higher rank. He learnt Pali in order to understand Buddhist scripts what Buddha taught.
After he achieved monk studying, he traveled to find an expert monk in meditation to learn meditation. He set off on a journey in the forest in northern Thailand. He met many senior monks on his journey and learnt meditation from them. LP Kasem practiced meditation consistently. Soon, he became a meditation expert. After that, he established Samnak Susan Trailak in Lampang Province and spent all his life here.
LP Kasem was a good monk all his life. He was kind, humble and modest. He passed away on the 15th January BE 2539 (CE 1996). After he passed away, his body does not decay. Today, people from many Provinces go to pay respect to LP Kasem’s body at Samnak Susan Trailak , Lampang Province every day. LP Kasem never disappears in people’s memory. He is still clear with his virtue.
Kruba Srivichai, a Pure Monk of Lanna:
Kruba Srivichai is a venerable Buddhist monk in Thai history, highly respected in Lanna (Northern Thailand) who led people to build the road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the temple where Buddha relics are situated on Doi Suthep (mountain), Chiang Mai Province.
Kruba Srivichai was born on 21 June 2411 BE (1868 CE) in Lamphun Province. He became a Buddhist novice at the age of 17 studying Dharma. At the age of 20, he got ordained as a monk.
In the past, it was very difficult for people to reach Doi Suthep. The path was narrow and bumpy. On foot, the journey took about five hours to reach the top of Doi Suthep. In 2477 BE (1934 CE), Kruba Srivichai came to Chiang Mai to initiate the road construction project. Jow Kaew Nawarat, the ruler of Chiang Mai at that time performed the groundbreaking ceremony. When the news of road construction of Kruba Srivichai spread around, thousands of people from Northern Provinces came to join.
Kruba Srivichai passed away on 20 February 2481 BE (1938 CE) at the age of 60. His bones were placed in the stupa at Wat Jammathewi, Lamphun Province.
